Item Description...
Product Description FUNNY.FRIGHTENING. TRUE. It happens to all of us: You're minding your own business, when some idiot informs you that guns are evil, the Prius will save the planet, or the rich have to finally start paying their fair share of taxes. Just go away! you think to yourself -- but they only become more obnoxious. Your heart rate quickens. You start to sweat. You can't get away. Your only hope is... ...this book.Glenn Beck, author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers An Inconvenient Book and Glenn Beck's Common Sense, has stumbled upon the secret formula to winning arguments against people with big mouths but small minds: knowing the facts. And this book is full of them. The next time your Idiot Friends tell you how gun control prevents gun violence, you'll tell them all about England's handgun ban (see page 53). When they tell you that we should copy the UK's health-care system, you'll recount the horrifying facts you read on page 244. And the next time an idiot tells you that vegetable prices will skyrocket without illegal workers, you'll stop saying "no, they won't" and you'll start saying, "actually, eliminating all illegal labor will cause us to spend just $8 a year more on produce." (See page 139.) Idiots can't be identified through voting records, they can be found only by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, embrace partisanship, and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. If you know someone who fits the bill, then Arguing with Idiots will help you silence them once and for all with the ultimate weapon: the truth.

 | Neat book! Jan 18, 2010 |
| This was a neat book. It reminded me of old social studies books but with funny and useful information in it. I recommend it. | | | | I can't put it down.... Jan 17, 2010 |
| This book should be required reading for everyone in congress. It's arguments are well thought out and presented in a manner that makes it an easy read. | | | | Appealing to Even the Most Unlikely Jan 17, 2010 |
| I gave this to my brother, who is a really strong left-winger, simply because of the title. Surprisely enough, he really likes it and finds Beck to be very sound in his arguments. | | | | A Great Read Jan 14, 2010 |
I got this book when it first came out and couldn't wait to dive in. I enjoy Beck's sense of humour, the ease of read, his "A.D.D. moments" he adds (more like a thought bubble to a paragraph).
I found the book to be well written, and if you watch GB's show on FNC; you will enjoy this book as his personality just shines through.
A great read! | | | | Not for this idiot Jan 13, 2010 |
Brief laughter at the obvious Partisan clusters of ratings at 'one' and 'five stars'
As hater I grabbed this book from the public library, as not to through my money into the Fox news "commentator's" coffers. I admit I read it straight away imagining in savage delight the offense this book would cause, and the fun I'd have rebutting Mr Beck's arguements.
None of this happened.
From the moment I looked at the book and saw Glenn's ridiculous facial expressions on both front and back covers I realized something. Its all for show.
The book is a jumbled colorful creation filled with endless pictures of Glenn, ADD tidbits and slightly annoying attempts at pictorial humour.
You see the real problem with the book is the format - idiot argument presented, Glenn rebuts - fails to impress. Glenn writes the idiot arguments himself, and while I accept that they are arguments that have probably been presented to Beck, they hardly prompt the deepest replies.
So in short you get a whole book spelling out Glenn's philosophies in plain-speak without any real criticisms or deeper considerations and common to many polemics, no positive solutions to any of his complaints.
Strangely I found myself agreeing with some of his points about owning propery and the American dream of white picket fences, although it was a bit of a stretch to link this issue with the central thesis of why government sucks.
Also there were a couple of good jokes in the book, and I did laugh at this one about socialism:
"yeah we get it - there's a perfect world in your head just waiting to bust out. Maybe you should go buy an island and start your own utopian Marxist micro-nation where songbirds chirp and lollipops dance. Oops-I almost forgot!... You can't by and island because you HAVE NO MONEY. And why do you have no money? Because YOU SIT AT HOME THINKING ABOUT THIS CRAP!"
Maybe just cos I expected him to say something about wealth distribution making everyone poor or some such.
If you're like me and like to get riled and offended this book probably won't work, mostly cos I'm about to quote the only two offensive parts. One for being outrageously un-compassionaite the other for same degree arrogance.
"If anyone from France takes offense at this, I'm sorry, but sometimes the truth hurts. At least take some solace in the fact that while your beloved country may already be too far gone to save, you could still save us from suffering the same fate. Think of it as a down payment on your balance from World War II"
I'm not French, but I still found that incredibly offensive.
"I believe that our creator allows violence, death and destruction to happen because he knows that the implications of stopping those things are far worse. I only wish the state would head his advice. Unfortunately most of our politicians believe they're smarter than he is"
Urg, its just so flawed and unbelievabily self worshiping.
Anyhow, don't bother reading this book to diss, or rebut Glenn Beck, nothing in it is worth doing so, and I just spoiled the only really offense bits of the book.
If you want to read this because you are a fan and sympathiser of Beck's then its going to take more than an this site review to save your sorry ass | | | Write your own review about Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government
