The format was a smash hit -- resonating with listeners from coast to coast and giving a powerful voice to the conservative movement. Soon such programming, attracting an estimated 50 million listeners weekly, dominated the airwaves where liberal talk radio failed. Popular, profitable, outspoken, powerful, influential -- it's what the American people wanted, and its success was the Democrats' worst nightmare. Now, the principles of the Fairness Doctrine threaten to be reinstated -- if not directly, then through back-door tactics involving ownership of stations. Under cover of being "fair," they will prove to be anything but: They will be used as a means of censorship by those with contempt for conservative talk radio. With our current Congress firmly under Democratic control, the future of talk radio -- indeed, freedom of speech for all Americans -- is under direct attack.

Conservative talk show programmer Brian Jennings raises valid concerns over possible reinstatement of the "Fairness Doctrine", which in all fairness, threatens our basic First Amendment rights, as Americans. This is another example of big government wielding power in areas that infringe on our civil liberties and personal freedom. They've done enough meddling; every time they interfere with our privacy and our Constitutional rights, we've also got to foot the bill. How revolting.
This country is already well on its way towards the disastrous effects of socialism; the more programs and policies that are inflicted upon us, the less civil liberties we have and the less personal income we're left with. It's a scenario that poses a very real and present danger to our psyche.
As Jennings implores, along with author Brad O'Leary in Shut Up, America!: The End of Free Speech, it's time for big government to start shrinking; not expanding. We're running the risk of becoming a nation of sheep, with no clear voice of reason to follow; just the bleating from the masses.

My favorite liberal talk show hosts- Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann- are not concerned with bringing back the fairness doctrine. What they are concerned with is the dumbing down of America. It is important to recognize that the media is controlled by 5 or 6 major corporations who rely on insurance companies, oil companies and drug companies along with every election cycle for their advertising revenues.
When Glen Beck is taken seriously by any more than 1,000 people in this country we already have a problem.
When Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity can interview each other and people call that news we have a bigger problem.
When a handful of far right groups buy thousands of copies of Ann Coulter and put her on the baest sellers list and then Larry Kudlow invites her opinions on the economy (or anything) we are in the realm of spin which keeps multimillionaires' tax rates low, your insurance rates and oil prices high.
Lipstick on a pig? Death panels? Let's talk about the citizens of our country played for suckers.
Don't worry about the fairness doctrine- read "THe Shock Doctrine".

Let me say from the get go that I am a Libertarian minded woman and rabidly free speech/press. What concerns me about this book is the fact that the fairness doctrine was just that. A requirement that all sides of an issue be provided by the public air ways that we all own. Rather than for making money. There is a lot of fear tactics being used to scare people into thinking that the Rush Limbaughs and Sean Hannity's and all the other one sided radio shows will not be allowed if we have a fairness doctrine.
Anyone who knows about the fairness doctrine that we had up until twenty or so years ago, knows it was about having all candidates that were running for an office on radio and television shows. And the author is disingenuous when he notes that he and his conservative peers, don't resort to intimidation when dealing with the left, liberals etc. In fact the definition of intimidation has to do with suggesting some type of fear. Something talk radio does well.
Where the liberals have failed when it comes to talk radio, is in being to serious or intellectual, along the lines of a William F Buckley and Phil Donahue, who in the past on television, actually sought to have a dialogue or discussion where one was calm and thoughtful. Many people who listen to conservatives on the radio do so according to many unbiased studies, do so for entertainment reasons. Remember President Obama and not some right wing person won the Presidency.
And the fairness doctrine deals with the FREE airwaves, like AM and FM, so even progressives and liberals would be effected, not just conservative thinkers. And if we are honest we will admit that conservatives have more programs on radio, as well as many many publications and Internet sites. Liberals and progressives have some tv shows, NPR a few select radio shows like KGO which I listen to, and various Internet sites.
Cannot see the fairness doctrine being brought back. Would like to see more of an effort when it comes to issues on the ballot, made to make sure ALL sides are given serious coverage. And as a third generation homeschooling, Libertarian minded family we believe in reading and looking at all sides of an issue. Media evolves and will continue to do so.
